Flat organization

A flat (or horizontal) organization is one with few or no intermediate management levels.

It differs from the traditional hierarchical structure adopted by large organizations, where people at the base of the pyramid often have to seek authorization or validation from higher up before they can act.

Preconceived ideas about flat organizations

A flat organization doesn't necessarily mean there are no managers. Managers still have their place, but their role is evolving considerably.

The role of the manager in a flat organization

In a flat organization, the manager focuses on what matters:

  • Coaching teams.
  • Providing constructive feedback to encourage continuous improvement.

This model gives employees greater autonomy while guaranteeing strategic support from managers.
