Self-fulfillment
Self-fulfillment is the idea that human beings are fundamentally driven by the desire to live life to the full.
This concept was first developed by Abraham Maslow in his hierarchy of needs. Maslow considered the need for self-actualization to be innate, and the force that drives individuals to seek greater personal fulfillment.
In this hierarchy, self-fulfillment is at the top of the pyramid, after the satisfaction of more fundamental needs:
- Physiological needs: food, water, warmth, rest.
- Security needs: personal safety, stability.
- Needs for belonging and love: intimate relationships, friendship.
- Esteem needs: recognition, sense of accomplishment.
- Self-fulfillment: realizing one's full potential, including in creative activities.
It is this last level that represents the ultimate goal: to reach one's maximum potential.
